Kevington - Star of The West Gold Mine Walk
Turn onto the 3km steep 4WD track opposite "Bocking " on the Mansfield - Woods Point Road to find the Day Visitor Area carpark and then walk 1km from there to the gold mine site. You can walk the 4WD track to the visitor area if it's not suitable for your vehicle to drive down. There is a picnic table.
This was the richest local gold mine, having produced 33,000 ounces of gold from 1863 to 1918. It is situated at the head of Mack's Creek near the township of Kevington, which is further downstream. The reef system the mine is on extended from Jamieson to Walhalla in Gippsland.
Today you will see evidence of mullock heaps, adits, shafts and furnaces.
Keep to the track at all times as dangerous conditions exist and there are unmarked shafts in the area.
