Kerang - Middle Lake Ibis Rookery and Bird Hide
The Kerang Wetlands stretch from Kerang in the south to Lake Boga in the northwest. The wetlands are home to thousands of water birds including ibis, coots, sea eagles, herons, kites and spoonbills.
Every spring thousands of ibis flock to the area to breed which is the largest rookery in the southern hemisphere. The breeding season is September to December.
There is a viewing tower which is best visited at dawn or dusk when thousands of ibis are leaving and returning to their nests during the breeding season.
The Ibis Rookery and bird hide is about 9 km north of Kerang off the Murray Valley Highway.
There are two other main lakes in the immediate area. Reedy Lake (the closest to Kerang along the Murray Valley Highway) has the Apex Park Recreation Area where there is a grassy area with picnic facilities and a lake beach with shallow water which is for safe swimming.
Reedy Lake Sanctuary is another 3 km north further along the the highway from Middle Lake and has some picnic facilities.
Review:
Near the car parking area is a shelter with table, BBQ, unshaded table, toilets and information boards. There is a nature trail, culture trail and a 350m walk to a bird hide. In late December we didn't see any ibis but did see some pelicans from the bird hide. There is a telescope (free to use) in the bird hide.
