Jessie Traill Nature Reserve (Harkaway)
Jessie Traill Nature Reserve, which is 2.4 hectares in size, is named after a distinguished local painter and war veteran who donated this area of land to the citizens of Harkaway. The reserve consists of three parcels of land. The first parcel was given to the citizens of Harkaway by Miss Jessie Traill, a distinguished artist and war veteran. The City of Casey later acquired the remaining two parcels when the adjacent land was subdivided. In 1993, with the help or local residents, the Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers started removing weeds in the nature reserve and in 1996 the Friends of Harkaway Reserves was formed. The Friends group has worked tirelessly for many years. Today the reserve is one of Casey's most diverse, with more than 110 plant species on show.
There is car parking, walking track, interpretive signage (about Jessie Traill, kookaburras, ringtail possums, sulphur-crested cockatoos) and plenty of seating along the path. The reserve follows a creek but there is noise from the nearby road. The track winds back to the start point on King Road or you can cut back through the tennis club to the carpark where there is a playground.
