Half Moon Bay Beach (Mount Eliza)

Half Moon Bay Beach (Mount Eliza)

Half Moon Bay consists of over 200 m of high tide, sandy beach, which sweeps in three small arcs below the red bluffs and between more prominent reefs. There is good access and parking.

Access - The Canadian Bay Road is used for access to both Canadian Bay beach and Half Moon Bay beach. There is a reserve with picnic facilities and a car park. A seawall protects the southern side of the point.

Swimming - Half Moon Bay beach is relatively safe when waves are low, with care required at low tide around the rocks and reefs. Strong westerlies and higher waves generate strong rips along the beach, with permanent rips during westerly conditions against the rocks and reefs.

Half Moon Bay beach has a General Beach Hazard Rating of 2/10 (Least hazardous).

Review:

Beside the carpark at the west end of Canadian Bay Road is a picnic area with six picnic tables, water tap and toilets.

A path with wooden steps at the end leads down to the beach. The beach is backed by cliffs and the beach is fairly narrow with rocks and concrete scattered about. At the south end the water and the beach becomes very rocky which could be a good area to explore rock pools when the tide is out.

The rocky cliffs have some interesting erosion patterns.

Access for Dogs:

During Daylight Savings
  • Dogs are prohibited from the beach between 9am and 7pm.
  • Leash free from 7pm to 9am the next day.

All Other Times of the Year
