Gumnut Park Playground, Olivine Boulevard, Donnybrook
This destination playground is inspired by the stories of May Gibbs' Snugglepot & Cuddlepie. A series of huge gumnut cubbies sit level with the treetops of 200 year-old River Red gums which are interconnected with scary rope mesh tunnels and feature massive and spectacular slides. The cubbies and slides are reached by a series of rope and metal ladders and nets which should be accessible for most kids.
For those with less of a head for heights there is a huge gum nut cubby set on a elevated platform reached by a set of stairs. Once you've finished playing in the cubby, ride the wide, low slide down into the huge sandpit which has a big sand play structure.
There is also a large rope and log climbing area with log bridges, rope nets, rope bridges and a jumble of logs, two standard swings, four in-ground trampolines and two side by side flying foxes with disk seats.
There are lovely lawns set among the trees, two shelters with picnic tables, BBQs and water taps.
Across from the playground is a decent skatepark and basketball half court. It has an oval concreate area with quarters at each end, fun box in the middle and a box on the side. One of the grassy areas has a volleyball net.
On the other side of the car park is a large lake with picnic tables and a pier jutting into the lake.
Keep an eye open for some beautiful wooden carvings - there's a kangaroo near the volleyball court, goanna and koala near the picnic shelters, wombat near the carpark and a kangaroo beside the lake.
A highlight of the playground is Shared Cup cafe which is a great place for a coffee or snack and has views across the playground. Shared Cup is a not for profit social enterprise cafe with the aim of supporting the community. It is open from 8am to 5pm daily.
Toilets, which are associated with the cafe, are open at the following times: Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm, Saturday - Sunday 9am - 6pm. The cafe and toilets are not open on public holidays.
