Review:
Stodgy Gumbuya Park has been transformed into bright and buzzy Gumbuya World with the help of $50 million. It's hard to picture where the scant remains of Gumbuya Park fit within the new area. Some of the best features of the old park such as Australia's longest concrete toboggan and the large woodland areas where animals such as kangaroos roamed have unfortunately been replaced or changed to inferior versions but that's progress.
The new park has two giant water slides, Taipan and Boomerango. They both use a raft which can fit anywhere between one and four people depending on how sociable you are and how much you weigh. Each group of people is weighed before they get into the raft to ensure that the total weight is not more than the maximum (136.4 kg). There is also a minimum height restriction of 1.22m for these two rides. Thankfully there is a conveyor belt to take the rafts up to the top of the huge tower. The green raft, Taipan, is a standard ride which is nice and long but with no surprises while the yellow raft, Boomerango, is much more exciting. After some twists and turns, there is a very fast and steep dive followed by the raft going high up onto the opposite wall and plunging back down. This ride is fun. The queues were sort of reasonable but it would have helped if there were three operators at the top of the slides rather than a single person from the start of the day.
The rest of the water themed area is very nice. There is a lazy river and two rock pools which all have beautifully warm water. The rockpools are small pools which have a beach entry and reach a depth of 1.3m. A nice feature are the ledges around the side of the pool which are nice to sit on while the kids swim around you.
The main entry and exit point for the lazy river is next to the pools. You can have as many laps as you like on the inflatable rings which means that it can be frustratingly difficult to get a ring during peak times in the afternoon. If you can't get a ring the other option is to swim around without one. The rings move around quite quickly and there is one corner with choppy waves to add some interest.
In the middle is the water playground with three exciting, fast slides and a few simple slides for toddlers. There is a tipping bucket and plenty of water sprays. The water in this area was very cold.
In the corner is a wake boarding area but this costs extra to use.
We found that there were enough shaded areas including lounge chairs in the Oasis Springs area. There were a number of areas with shade sails and umbrellas.
The rides in the rest of the park were good but a bit limited for each age group. There is a spectacular ride, Rebel, which swings you in different directions high in the air including upside down at the top of the arc. You need to be 1.4m tall and age 14 and above for this ride.
Other rides in the Oz Adventure zone included the Tree Swing (spin around a tree in a seat suspended from a chain), Mining Race Coaster (a small but fun roller coaster) and Rush Hour (large cars which spin and tilt in all directions).
The Oz Adventure merges into the Outback Explorers area which is tailored towards younger kids. This area has a playground and six rides to keep kids of this age well entertained.
The wildlife area is a lot more compact now but does include more features such as a walk through aviary and a animal petting area which has animals such as rabbits, goats and sheep. There is a walk through area with wallabies and another walk through area with kangaroos where you can get close to the animals, especially the kangaroos. It is possible to buy animal food for $3 a bag but be careful feeding the emus since they don't seem to be able to distinguish between food and fingers! There were a lot of animal encounter experiences being offered for $20 each.
One controversial rule is that you can't bring your own food into the park. This means that the park is not suited to family outings centred around BBQs or picnics. There are sufficient food outlets with a combination of indoor and outdoor seating offering standard food options such as chips, fish, chicken nuggets, hamburgers, pizzas, salads, ice-creams and drinks. The prices are close to $10 for a lunch meal without a drink. We didn't notice any free drinking taps so I would suggest bringing water in with you to reduce the cost.
The entry prices are based on age while the other theme parks, Funfields and Geelong Adventure Park are based on height, which makes a direct price comparison a bit difficult. Generally though, if your children are less than 130cm in height, Gumbuya World will be more expensive.
Gumbuya World is open the whole year round (with reduced entry prices during the off season). Apart from young kids, who have quite a lot of rides available in the Outback Explorers area, the park is dominated by Oasis Springs, the water play area. Unless more non-water based attractions are built, I don't see this as a place to come during the off season unless you have young kids.
