Ararat - Green Hill Lake
Green Hill Lake with an area of 260 hectares is located just four kilometres east of Ararat on the Western Highway and has a concrete walking and cycling path which runs from the city to the lake.
The lake is stocked with trout for fishing enthusiasts and the area is ideal for walking, water sports and bird watching.
Facilities
There are facilities for campers and travellers including drinking water, fire pits, picnic tables, free gas BBQs, chairs, playground, exercise equipment, pontoon, boat ramps, RV dump point, remains of gold mining and even hot showers.
Swimming
There are two designated swimming areas; one at East Beach and one near the boat ramp in the south-east. See the map below.
Fishing
The lake is known for its redfin and trophy trout fishing with regular stockings of rainbow and brown trout taking place. Fly fishing is also a popular activity held at the lake.
Camping
The campground has no designated camping spots and no powered sites - camp where you like, so no need to book - camping is free however there are suggestion and donation boxes on each amenities block. Most campers donate $5 per camp site per night to help our volunteers with upgrades and maintenance costs. Note that camping permits apply for stays greater than 5 days/nights and the maximum period of occupancy is 28 days in any calendar year.
The Don'ts of Staying at Green Hill Lake
- Please do not cut any tree or shrub down. They are protected and fines apply for cutting down any flora in the park. We have wood available to buy, call 0408 501 016 to arrange delivery.
- Obey all speed signs to preserve our children's safety and keep the dust down.
- Obey the speed limits and restricted zones when on the water.
- We encourage you to use a fire pit for fires except in times of total fire ban when no fires are permitted.
- Generators are to be used between 10am and 6pm only (8pm daylight summer time).
- Do not camp on the foreshore or discharge grey water into the lake.
- If you are staying for more than 5 days you need a permit from Ararat Rural City Council to stay up to 28 days per calendar year.
- Do not use the Toilets as a Dump Point. Go to the Dump Point provided outside the top toilet near the end of the dirt road.
- Antisocial behaviour will result in a visit from the police. This includes playing loud music, using generators after times permitted, fighting or destruction of property or amenities.
- Dogs are permitted but must be on a lead at all times within the park area (this contradicts some other signage).
- Cats are not permitted.
- Fire Arms or weapons of any type are not permitted.

- Fishing is welcome, the lake is stocked regularly by the Fisheries Department.
- Bird life is abundant on and off the water. Please respect the environment so those in the future may enjoy the wildlife. All Fauna and Flora is protected.
- Do make your $5.00 per night donation before you go.
- Please clean the BBQ's after use.
- Visit Ararat and local attractions from your base camp at the Lake.
