Review:
At the west end of Pier Street there's a car parking area in the middle of the road and there is also another gravel parking area near the pier.
On the north side of Pier Street is a shelter with table, unshaded BBQ and table under a tree.
There is a gravel walking track to the north on an embankment beside the water. There a big tides in this area, so the mudflats can go out a long way before you see water (depending on the tides). After a few hundred metres there are wooden steps leading down to the water. When we were there we saw a lot of interesting jellyfish which had been left stranded on the beach.
You could continue along the narrow sandy beach as water levels allow.
There are historical information signs, toilets, two seats overlooking the water and unshaded table near the pier/boat ramp.
The historical information signs include:
From the 1860s, Grantville was one of the main entry points for pioneers arriving in the district, whether by road or by ship. Supplies also came in the same way.
The only place people could get stores from was Grantville and, if the boat got wind jammed (which was often the case) you had to wait until she did get in before you could get all the stores you wanted, for the storekeeper was bound to be out of some of them.
In January 1885, the government called for tenders for the construction of a pier at Grantville and in May 1885, Laurence Mouat's bid of 643 pounds was accepted. Work was completed and the pier opened in late 1885 or early 1886. The current pier was built near the remnants of the original.
