Gower - Gowar State School No. 1149 Ruins

Gower - Gowar State School No. 1149 Ruins

The Gowar State School site is an early small school which was established in 1855 and occupied until 1908. Since that time it has been left abandoned but the stone foundations are are still in reasonable condition.

The site is located about 6km south-east of Maldon beside the Castlemaine-Maldon Road.

The school is the only remains of the small town of Gowar (was originally spelled this way and later changed to Gower) which was a small community with a population of around 100 people with two hotels and this small school. After the gold rush period the demand for a school is this area was not present and the school was closed in 1908.

The remains of the building have been reinforced with steel beams and is surrounded by a wire fence.
