Gong Gong - Kirks Reservoir Park

The gardens around Kirks Reservoir are a showcase of horticultural skill and sensitive design. Open all year, the park's diverse indigenous species, rustic stone walls and thoughtfully planted garden beds create a spectacular setting for picnics and recreational pursuits. Such scenery also makes Kirks popular for weddings.

The park contains more than 100 indigenous species of plants, some of which date from the early 1860s. Improvements in the last decade include the introduction of over 2,000 plants, as well as additional seating, fencing, walls and interpretive signs.

Set within the gardens around the reservoir, the Water Wise Garden presents information about the effective use of water and planting methods in the region. The Garden features a wide range of common plants and flowers, and demonstrates how they respond to certain conditions. The Water Wise Garden is popular with gardeners keen to learn how to be more 'water wise' in their own gardens. Guided tours and information days are conducted regularly. For further information contact Central Highlands Water on (03) 5320 3162.

Kirks Reservoir Park is just a 10 minute drive from the centre of Ballarat. The park has ample parking, free undercover gas BBQs and toilet facilities. The wooden rotunda and surrounding garden (flat lawn) and the steel rotunda near the reservoir wall are ideal for wedding ceremonies (free, bookings required).

School groups can learn about the water cycle and water efficiency at the Outdoor Education Centre.
