Glen Eira Street and Public Art
The amount of street art murals in Glen Eira is gradually increasing and there is an extensive program of painted signal boxes.
The range of street and public art includes:
Bentleigh
Stationary Faces inspired by Pamela Irving and created by the Community (2011)
A huge community mosaic mural on the underpass of Patterson Railway Station which is made up of several hundred individual mosaic faces, which have been patch-worked together to create a lovely mosaic mural. The project was inspired by local artist, Pamela Irving whose goal was to engage the community in making an artwork which would reduce graffiti, recycle unwanted tiles and beautify the dull underpass environment.

Floating Home by Hayden Dewar (2019)
The brief for the mural was to have a nature based theme. After brainstorming ideas with young workshop participants, the final design was a surreal scene featuring local native flora and fauna and the inhabitants of floating islands that convey the idea of the 'journey'. Both floating towards your destination and literally residing on a floating home. The mural includes images of chocolate lilies, River Red Gums, wombat and a skink, spanning 30 meters wide and 4 meters tall.

'Paper Boy', 'Mother and Child' and 'Climbing Boys' Sculptures by Phillip J. Canizzo (1980)
In 1975 the Council of the City of Caulfield commissioned sculptor Phillip J. Canizzo to produce a series of statues on community life in Caulfield.
Seven statues were made, 'Paper Boy', 'Mother and Child resting after shopping' and 'Climbing Boys' with three twenty foot climbing poles with small boys clinging at the top, and a small bronze boy watching the climbers from below. Statues were made from foundry molten metal poured into moulds. The wax system of casting, a craft abandoned by contemporary artists was used. The statues were completed in 1980.
It is rumoured that a paper boy was killed on the corner and that one of the statues is dedicated to him.

Floral Tribute by Wendy Straume (2018)

Glen Huntly Anchor
Commemorating the history of the suburb of Glen Huntley. Glen Huntly was an emigrant bounty ship that departed Greenock Scotland in December 1839 with 157 passengers on her maiden voyage. It arrived four and a half months later in Melbourne on the 17th April 1840. These emigrants were seeking to escape a life of poverty but the journey was frought with illness. It is thought that Typhus and Small pox spread throughout the ship causing the deaths of ten people during the voyage. As the ship entered Hobsons Bay it flew the yellow flag at its mast, declaring itself to be a 'fever ship'. As a result the ship was ordered to land at Little Red Bluff, St Kilda, now known as Point Ormond, where a makeshift quarantine station was set up. This area had not been settled by colonial settlers at this stage and so it was at a sufficient distance from the growing city of Melbourne to prevent further spread of disease. One of the great aspects to living in Glen Eira is being able to enjoy one of the many local parks and its bird wildlife. This drawing turns the humble park walk into a lively bird tweeting musical scorecard with each bird representing the different musical notes and the fence providing the musical bars on a sheet of music.

One side is painted with a mechanical robot girl, surrounded by blue butterflies with dark cogs hanging all around them, their red heart remaining exposed in the centre of her chest. The back of the signal box has a chess pawn, with a family of cogs and butterflies keeping it company. A red heart sprayed on the side of the base of the pawn, it has an obvious connection to the automaton girl. The sides are a chessboard chequered pattern with little icons representing local businesses near the box.
