Fairbairn Street Playground, Balmoral

Fairbairn Street Playground, Balmoral

Perched in the corner of a block is a structure with wave slide, spiral ladder, shop front, abacus, steps, balance beam with obstacles, monkey rungs, hanging disk traverse and climbing wall. See-saw with frog seats but no swings.

Two unshaded tables, unshaded and shaded seats and some sloping grassy area.

This is the site of the first school in Balmoral which was built in 1858. The school, a slab-built structure was unlined. The inspector's report described it as having "too much ventilation". The first head teacher, Mr Abraham Lauder, arrived after a difficult journey through the "wilderness" from Woodford near Warrnambool. In 1867, when the new school was built on another site, this primitive building was used as the stable for Cobb and Co. horses on the Balmoral - Coleraine run.
