Eildon Spillway Lookouts
The Eildon Spillway Lookout is located on the north side of the spillway and offers an excellent view down the Goulburn River Valley below towards Eildon and Thornton.
Other viewing areas at the spillway include the carpark area, the garden area, views from along the spillway, views from behind the spillway and views from the north side of the spillway.
The main lookout has an undercover area with two bench seats and interpretive signage. The carpark area supports larger vehicles such as buses and is an overflow carpark for the popular Alliance Boat Ramp.
Stairs leading down to the garden viewing area is via the carpark (near the Spillway and toilet). On the opposite side of the road are historic plaques and a viewing area for the rear of the Spillway Gates. A track leads from here to the Alliance Boat Ramp and also offers spectacular views. From here you can see the steel gates that rise and fall to let water out of the lake, as well as the amazing effort that was put into cutting through the hill. Of note for those with an interest in geology is the visible layers of rock exposed by the cut.
Care should be taken on the 61 steps up to the main lookout. These steps can be slippery when wet. Please us the hand rails and do not run.
The view from this lookout is especially great during colourful sunsets.
