Eildon - Mount Torbreck
Mount Torbreck is a high mountain peak within the Rubicon State Forest with a peak height of 1515 meters above sea level. The mountains summit offers the climber a great view over the ranges and even back to Eildon and the Eildon Weir.
The mountain is a beautiful example of the Victorian Alpine region with beautiful alpine gums including snow gums and alpine wild life all around. Take the time to look and listen as you take breaks during your ascent. You will see the changes in the landscape as your altitude increases.
The 2.1km climb to the summit starts from Barnewall Plains which is accessible from the North on the Eildon Jamieson Road or from the South via the Snobs Creek Road. Both access roads are season roads and are closed from Thursday after the Queens Birthday to Thursday before the Melbourne Cup Public Holiday inclusive.
Please be aware that some areas of the track can be extremely dangerous and climbers should take precautions to avoid leaving the marked track. During wet times the walking track can be very muddy and slippery, so ensure you have appropriate footwear at all times and walk with care.
There is a flat style square table at Barnewall Plains, though no other facilities are available.
Do not rely on having mobile phone signal. There is no water on the mountain, so ensure you take your own water and high energy snacks for the climb.
