Deutsche Schule Melbourne (Fitzroy North)
Deutsche Schule Melbourne is a German English Bilingual School located in the heart of Fitzroy North. The vision for students at Deutsche Schule Melbourne is to grow up learning two languages at the same time, preparing the children to become confident citizens of an increasingly global community. The school caters for families of German, English or any other language background. No prior German knowledge or background is required. Deutsche Schule Melbourne offers children the opportunity to learn a second language to the equivalent of a native speaker level.
Currently, Deutsche Schule Melbourne offers bilingual primary school education with classes taught both in English and German. In the early primary school years 80% of classes are taught in German. Almost all teachers hold a Master's degree in primary and/or secondary education and are bilingual in German and English. All teachers are fully registered to teach in Victoria. The school's worldwide proven and tested immersion model provides a solid base for its bilingual education. A key feature of this model is the 'one teacher-one language' approach which means that all teachers communicate with the students exclusively in the teacher's mother tongue. Students gain knowledge of curricular subjects while simultaneously learning two languages. The proportion of classes taught in English gradually increases so that by Year 6, classes are taught 50% in English and 50% in German.
