Dalyston - Mouth of Powlett River
The mouth of the Powlett River is a lovely spot to while away an afternoon.
The wide, slow moving river is ideal for kayakers or a spot of fishing.
Sometimes a sand bar blocks the river's course to the ocean, making a crossing to the other side of the river possible.
Kilcunda Nature Conservation Reserve sits on the banks of the river and is a haven for Australian creatures including wallabies, possums, and echidnas. Be sure to look to the sky and spot the warblers, honeyeaters and flycatchers.
Activities in the area around the Powlett River mouth include:
- Fishing - The rips and reefs make Cemetery Point, at the opening of Powlett River, an ideal beach fishing spot. Drop a line in at the estuary and fill your esky with bream, yellow eye mullet, sea mullet, flounder and estuary perch.
- Canoeing, Kayaking, and Stand Up Paddle Boarding - It's a lovely safe location for watercraft.
- Swimming - The river is fairly shallow in sections and is suited to all ages. The river is a much safer location than the ocean mouth.
- Sand dune sliding - The dunes can be reached by swimming or wading across the river from the car park. There is also a grass track in from the other side of the river which is accessed from a bushland trail signposted on the Mouth of Powlett Road on the way down.
- Birdwatching -The range of habitats attracts different and interesting bird species - Ocean beaches are loved by the Hooded Plovers, the river floodplains attract Blue-winged and Orange-bellied Parrots, while honeyeaters and thornbills can be spotted in the banksia groves.
- Bushwalking - There are some short walks in the area.
- Rockpooling -Explore the rock pools at low tide.
