Colbrook Reservoir
Colbrook Reservoir is located in the Wombat State Forest and features a spectacular dam wall with a seasonal waterfall. The reservoir is very scenic and is great for swimming, fishing, bush camping, bird watching and bushwalking. It was the former water supply reservoir for Ballan.
Camping
At the reservoir and in the surrounding bush, free camping is permitted but there are no facilities here. On the shore opposite the dam wall, there are some spots suitable for camping.
Dam Wall and Waterfall
When water levels are high, typically in winter and spring, there is a spectacular flow of water over the edge of the impressive dam wall on the south-western side and down the side like a waterfall. It is possible to get down to the base of the dam wall but take care.
Walking
There is a walking track around the reservoir which links the dam wall and the camping area.
Swimming
The reservoir is suitable for swimming but avoid the dam wall so there is no risk of being swept over. The water is fairly clear with mud and silt underneath. The water depth is greater than two metres and the area is recommended for more experienced swimmers. Since the reservoir is no longer used to supply water to Ballan, it usually stays close to full right through the summer period which helps to make swimming here more attractive.
How to get to the Reservoir
Colbrook Reservoir can be accessed by rough uneven dirt tracks which can be muddy in wet weather and is recommended by 4x4 vehicles only. It is possible to get close in a 2WD vehicle and walk the last 600m.
The reservoir is accessible with 4WD via an unnamed track off Binks Road, Colbrook.
From the Western Freeway turn off at the Ballan exit and then head north along the Ballan-Greendale Road and then 1 km north of the freeway turn left into Blakeville Road. Follow Blakeville Road for 8 km then turn right into Binks Road. Follow Binks Road for 1.9 km. Park and walk to the reservoir take any of the three 4WD tracks heading down to the reservoir if you have a 4WD.
