Clunes - South Clunes Mine Historic Site
The former South Clunes mine started operations as a reef mine in 1859. An alluvial drift was discovered running through the site and this then became the mine's main source of gold.
A tramway ran from this site down to the crushers at the end of William Street. The steep valley gave easy gravitational feed to the battery on Creswick Creek.
In 1885 the company amalgamated with the Lothair Mine and became the South Clunes United Company.
The former mine is located on both sides of Victoria Street in Clunes
