The Best Christmas Lights around Melbourne 2023
Christmas is a special time of the year when Mum slaves over a hot oven in sweltering heat to produce a plump roast turkey and a table laden with delicious accompaniments. It is also the time when generous souls risk life and limb putting up Christmas lights and decorations and receive an enormous electricity bill with a smile on their face. We owe you our gratitude.
In "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" Clark Griswold, a Christmas connoisseur, blacked out the entire neighborhood with his 25,000 incandescent bulb light display. We have it on good authority that the electricity generators have made allowances for Melbourne's most spectacular light displays which make the Griswold residence seem like a weak candle in comparison.
Melbourne's Christmas lights have become bigger, brighter and grander over the years and there are a number of places which consistently dazzle with Christmas spirit and lights. Sadly, in previous years some streets stopped their Christmas lights display because the local council classified it as an event which meant that the neighbours had to spend thousands of dollars to cover public liability insurance and traffic management costs. Casey council effectively extinguished the lights at Hugo Court in Narre Warren and Banyule council did the same at Allumba Drive, St Helena. This Christmas, with lockdowns and restrictions in the rear vision mirror, it's going to be a time of Christmas joy with some epic light displays.
We've put together a list of the best locations to see a Christmas lights spectacular in each area of Melbourne. The most spectacular and epic displays have been marked with stars.
If you find any new hot spots worth inclusion in the list or changes to this list please drop us an e-mail

Central Melbourne
Bourke Street Mall - The Myer windows are a long standing tradition which is entering its 68th magical year. The theme is usually based on either a children's book or nursery rhyme, and then broken into six parts, a section of the story for each window. However the inspiration can also come from current events or news happening across the globe such as the "Santa and the Olympics" theme in 1956 and "Santa's Journey into Space" to celebrate the start of space travel. This year the display has a theme of Bluey's Christmas. The windows will be on display daily from 7.30am to 10pm until 6th January.
