Carisbrook Heritage Walking Tour



Carisbrook is situated on the junction of Tullaroop and McCallums Creeks. It was the territory of the Wurn balug people William Urquhart surveyed the township in July 1851. Many of Carisbrook's streets were named after early squatters and settlers.

1. TILLY ASTON MEMORIAL
Erected in 1970 to commemorate Carisbrook's most famous daughter.

2. UNITING (METHODIST) CHURCH & HALL
Erected after first wooden church blew down in a storm in 1864.

3. BANK OF VICTORIA (SITE)
The bank operated from 1850s to 1860s.

4. CARISBROOK HOTEL
Opened 1857, delicensed 1914. Used as Egg Board Depot 1935-1944.

5. IRONMONGERY (SITE)
James Medcraft owned and operated a blacksmith and ironmongery here for many years.

6. BRITANNIA HOTEL
Opened 1857 as the Shamrock Hotel, became Britannia Hotel c1880.

7. BRUHN'S BUTCHERS SHOP (SITE)
Carl Bruhn moved his business from Majorca to here In 1897.

8. LOLLY SHOP (SITE)
Hugh Hink's shop built c1860 was a popular meeting spot.

9. FIRE STATION
The original station was built in 1895 Present building 1981.

10. CARISBROOK COMMON SCHOOL (SITE)
Open 1857-1874. Parts of foundations visible near Green St gates.

11. ST PAUL'S ANGLICAN CHURCH
Foundation stone 1865, opened 1866.

12. GENERAL STORE
Original section c1850s Note the interesting windows.

13. AUCTIONEER'S OFFICE
Goldsborough Mort & Co stock & station agents built 1923, now opportunity shop.

14. WOODEN COTTAGE
Victorian era house

15. MARKET RESERVE
Formerly Carisbrook Market 1860 with Market Hall & Weighbridge.

16. FORMER SHOP
Note rudimentary wood construction.

17 TILLY ASTON'S BIRTHPLACE
Born 1873 Died 1947.

18. OLD DAIRY
Built from bluestone quarried locally.

19. POST OFFICE
A boomtime building from 1888. Note the mason's name on front steps.

20. CARISBROOK TOWN HALL & CORN EXCHANGE
Opened 1859 for Borough of Carisbrook, extended 1892 Borough closed 1915.

21. POLICE RESIDENCE & STABLES
Police Camp originally in Camp St. Residence built 1859.

22. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Opened for divine services in 1869.

23. OLD HOUSES AT 19 & 21 URQUHART ST
c1850s Reported to have once been a Cobb & Co coach stop.

24. ST FRANCIS XAVIER ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
Foundation stone 1864.

25. PRESBYTERIAN MANSE
Built c1860s.

26 LAKE COLLEY (SITE)
The lake had an island and was encircled by a lovers walk. Filled in and now an oval.

27. COURT HOUSE - NOW MASONIC LODGE
Built 1858 for 992 pounds 10/-. A Court of Petty Sessions Best known Judge was Judge Macaboy.

28. BLUESTONE RESIDENCE
Built from local stone. Note the original shop front.

29. DE LIMA'S WINE SALOON (NOW PRIVATE RESIDENCE)
Built 1895, closed 1910.

30. W A SMITH'S STORE (NOW CAROLINE'S RESTAURANT)
Opened in 1853, it was Carisbrook's first store and post office.

31. BAKERY (NOW A PRIVATE RESIDENCE)
Built 1866 as a butchers shop. Later a bakery then guest house.

32. CARPENTER & UNDERTAKER (SITE)
Built for James Cook. Later Laurence Bland, commemorated in Bland Reserve, Tuilaroop Creek.

33. BUTCHER'S SHOP (NOW PRIVATE RESIDENCE)
Built by Johnny Downs who moved his business from Dunolly.

34. RAILWAY HOTEL (SITE)
Prior to 1885 it was known as the Camp Hotel.

35. BLAND RESERVE
Footbridge to Bucknall Reserve. BBQ & toilets.

36. LOG GAOL
Built 1852, oldest existing log gaol in Victoria.
