Camperdown Botanic Gardens
The Camperdown Gardens land was put aside in 1869 with work being carried out by Daniel Bunce from 1870, in 1888 inprovements were made under the guidance of William Guilfoyle. The Gardens feature three species of trees on the Significant tree registry - The African Holly, an avenue of nine Linden trees and two Himalayan Oaks. The impressive canopy also includes Elms, Cedars and Pines.
These magnificent gardens are perched above the two volcanic crater lakes of Lake Bullen Merri and Lake Gnotuk and are a wonderful place to enjoy a picnic or BBQ (free electric BBQ) with your friends and family.
Review:
The Gardens are accessible via the Lakes & Craters Holiday Park. It is a reasonably small area which celebrates the Scottish poet Robert Burns. There are a number of information boards about the poet and Camperdown's Robert Burns statue is believed to be the oldest surviving statue of Burns in the world. It stood on a plinth in the Gardens from 1883 to 2009. It is now housed in the Corangamite Shire Civic Centre in Camperdown but the plinth remains in the Gardens.
The trees are labelled and there are both trees and garden beds. It is located in an elevated position with nice views and quite shady in most places. There is a shelter with two tables and BBQ plus three partially shaded tables. There are also shaded and unshaded seats throughout.
