Baringhup - Cairn Curran Reservoir
Cairn Curran Reservoir is located on the Loddon River, about 10 km west of Maldon. Cairn Curran Reservoir was constructed between 1947 and 1956. The storage has a primary spillway, and a secondary spillway situated 2 km south‑west of the main structure that will spill before the embankment is overtopped.
The reservoir was named after the pastoral holding taken up in 1840. The original Cairn Curran property consisted of 100,000 acres and carried approximately 20,000 sheep and 300 cattle. The reservoir was constructed to supply water for irrigation, and domestic and stock use to customers along the Loddon River.
A wide range of recreational activities are permitted at Cairn Curran Reservoir. These include boating (power and sail), skiing, fishing, swimming (it is important that you check for signs about water quality before swimming), wind surfing, jet skiing and canoeing.
The recreational facilities available include picnic areas, toilet facilities, boat ramps, electric and wood BBQs, rubbish bins and shelters.
The main access points to the lake are on its eastern side near the dam wall. Boat ramps, sailing club, swimming areas, picnic areas and toilet facilities are available. Electric barbecue facilities are available at the dam wall picnic area.
Picnic Areas
From Maldon, travel up High Street, continue on the Bridgewater Road, turn left to Baringhup and Cairn Curran. Continue until you see the sign-posted left-hand turn to the reservoir at the start of Baringhup.
There are three picnic areas:
1. Turn right through the gates (which close at 4.30pm) to visit the weir where BBQs, picnic tables, and toilets are available;
or 2. Continue straight on and turn right at the sign to the boat ramp where BBQs, picnic tables, toilets are located;
or 3. Go past the above sign and drive to the left around the reservoir to a second boat ramp where you will find picnic tables and toilets.
The lake can also be accessed at the Welshman's Reef Caravan Park where a picnic area is available free of charge. Use of a boat ramp, toilets and other facilities are available for a small daily fee.
Camping is not permitted on the lake foreshores.
Visitors who intend to participate in boating activities on the lake should consult the boat zoning rules imposed by Goulburn-Murray Water. The rules depend on water levels in the reservoir.
The Cairn Curran Sailing Club has facilities at the lake. Visitors and new members are always welcome and sailing training is available.
