Brighton Beach
Brighton beach is a very accessible and popular beach with foreshore facilities. However beware of the often deep water and reefs.
Brighton Beach is a 1 km long, south-west facing beach, lying between the New Street groyne and Green Point. It is paralleled by a seawall and walkway, foreshore reserve and Beach Road. It is backed by Brighton shops and the railway station. The reserve has a large parking area and picnic facilities.
The beach is exposed to strong south-west winds and waves and, when they occur, they maintain a 60 to 100 m wide bar. This is either separated from the beach by a trough and/or cut by rip channels. In addition, rocks outcrop on parts of the beach, with more extensive reefs toward Green Point.
Swimming - Relatively safe when waves are low. However, water may be deep off the beach and there are rocks and reefs in places. During periods of strong winds and waves, longshore and rip currents are generated.
Brighton Beach has a General Beach Hazard Rating of 3/10 (Least hazardous).
Review:
Brighton beach is quite a long (1km) sandy beach which stretches from where South Road meets Beach Road to where New Street meets Beach Road.
At the north end near South Road there is a carpark with 4P ticketed parking from 8am - 8pm including public holidays.
There is a promenade beside the beach with regularly spaced seats and higher up the slope is a parallel bike path. Watch out for bikes as you cross from the car park to the beach.
The north end also has some nice examples of mosaics in the path plus a RSL Memorial and information boards which are part of the Bayside Coastal Art Trail. There are toilets, water tap and beach shower here.
This part of the beach has a rocky point at the extreme end. A long, sandy, fairly narrow beach extends for a long distance to the south with groynes (rock walls) protruding into the water at a number of points (approximately 100m apart). The water line does contain a lot of shells and stones. When you get to the third groyne the beach continues into Hampton Beach to the south.
Overall there are no facilities such as cafes near the beach and the high vegetated hill gives a bit of a sense of isolation.
The beach is close to the Brighton Beach train station on the Sandringham line.
Access for Dogs:
Peak period: 1 November - 31 March
- Dogs are prohibited between 10am and 7.30pm
- Dogs are permitted off leash between 7.30pm and 10am
Off Peak period: 1 April - 31 October
- Dogs are permitted off leash at all times.
