Bowlers Way Playground, Malvern East
A fully fenced playground which lawn bowlers will go crazy over since there are lots of bowling balls on plinths scattered throughout the playground area which is a nod to the history of the location.
The main wooden structure has ladders, rope nets, metal slides, scrambling ball, tunnel and steps. Also standalone monkey bars and two percussion flowers to hit with a clanger and a bowling ball springer.
Under shade sales is a birds nest swing and two standard swings.
Two unshaded tables and plenty of unshaded seats. At the rear is an oval shaped, rough gravel path around a grassy area for bike riding where there is also a water tap.
History of the Site
The Malvern - Caulfield Recreation Club was formed on the 31 May 1907. The initial purpose was to create a general recreation club to "cultivate all desirable sports". The club grounds were established at a four acre site on the corner of Dandenong Road and Queen's Avenue, Caulfield. The grounds included a bowling green and a croquet lawn. The name was later changed to the Caulfield Recreation Club. In 1972 when the Club's Dandenong Road site, originally Crown Land, was required for an expansion to Caulfield Technical College, the Club moved to land purchased by the State Government on this site. The name of the Club changed to Caulfield Bowls Club after the move. It became the East Malvern Bowls Club during the mid-1980s. Following the closure of the Club in 1995 due to lack of membership, the land was purchased by the Council and subdivided and a park and new street named Bowlers Way was created.
