Bowenvale - Alma Lead Cyanide Works
The historic mine and cyanide plant is located in the Gladstone Bushland Reserve. The site has mullock heaps, dams, cyanide vats, puddlers and closed shafts. Most of these features are at the southern end of the reserve.
A really interesting natural feature at the northern end, near some huge mullock heaps, is a large tree known as the Queen Tree. In the past it had been growing on higher ground but the ground beneath has been washed away over the years and now the tree majestically stands high above the ground supported by its roots.
How to get here: We found it very frustrating finding this location. Alma Lead Cyanide Works H.a. is on Google maps along Gladstone Road, Bowenvale. However, when we put "Gladstone Road, Bowenvale" into Google maps on our phone, it couldn't find this location. This is how we finally reached here. From Bowenvale/Timor we headed south along Timor Road and turned left onto Alma-Bowenvale Road. After 1.4km we turned into Longs Road (which becomes Smalls Road after some distance) and headed west. After about 500m you come to the turnoff for Gladstone Road. This is an unmarked gravel road. The reserve is about 600m along Gladstone Road. If you cross Logans road you have gone too far. The road was quite rutted when we were there but it was passable in a 2WD car.
