Everyone can enjoy the waterways of Melbourne and regional Victoria by hiring a watercraft such as a boat for sight-seeing or fishing, kayaks and canoes for some paddling adventures or a jetski for adrenaline filled action. Some tips on hiring a watercraft are:
- Some boat hires require a boat license. A boat license is required for fast boats but is not required to hire slower boats.
- Boat hire without a boat license can have restrictions on the distance you can travel from the boat hire location.
- A boat license with PWC endorsement is required to operate a jet ski anywhere in Victoria.
- Watercraft hire usually requires photo ID and a credit card for a deposit.
- There are generally different price schedules for hiring boats for fishing and cruising.

Boat Hire in Melbourne
Frankston Boat Hire (Frankston)
Services: A range of boats for hire for fishing including aluminium 6-person 'Tinnie', Classic Fibreglass (5m) 6 & 8 person half cabins, Modern Polycraft (4.6m+) 5 & 6 person with Bimini tops and Polycraft Ultimates 80/115 HP.
Prices: Tinnies are $195 for the first 4 hours then $39 per hour thereafter. Classic Fibreglass from $125 for the first 2 hours then from $45 per hour thereafter.
Notes: No boat license required. Boats are to be used for fishing and not cruising. Two person sea kayaks and Stand Up Paddle boards also available for hire.
Studley Park Boathouse (Kew)
Services: A fleet of rowboats, canoes and kayaks for a row along the Yarra River.
Prices: Row boats - 1 hr for 2 people: $42, 1 hr for 5 people: $54. Canoes - 1 hr for 2 people: $42, 1 hr for 3 people: $46. Kayaks - 1 hr for single: $32, 1 hr for double: $42.
Notes: All watercraft are hired with life vests, oars & paddles. Children must be accompanied by an adult, Photo id and refundable $20 safety deposit are required.
Mornington Boat Hire (Mornington)
Services: Fishing boat hire - Polycraft Centre Console boat (4-5 people with 4 adults max), Stacer Tinnie (3-4 adults), 4.2m Stacer (3-4 adults). Polycraft for cruising. Kayaks, SUPs and reef boards are also available for hire.
Prices: For fishing - From $90 for 2hr to $560 for 10hr. For cruising - From $100 for 1hr to $300 for 3hr.
Notes: No boat Licence required. Boat hire includes safety equipment, quality children's and adult life jackets, fuel usage, fish box, cutting board, landing net, knife and rod holders.
Rosebud Boat Hire (Rosebud)
Services: Hire of Aluminium Tinnies (max 6 people), Runabout (max 5 people, steer from the front) and Fibreglass with 1/2 cabin roof (max 6 people, steer from the front). Sea canoes, paddle boards, SUP and surf skis also available for hire.
Prices: Fishing with 2 hour minimum hire - Tinnies and Runabout from $65 per hour, Fibreglass with 1/2 cabin roof from $90 per hour. Cruising - Tinny from $130 per hour, Half cabin boat: $180 per hour
Notes: No licence or prior experience necessary. Bait and tackle are available from the kiosk.
GoBoat Melbourne (Southbank)
Services: Scandinavian picnic boats with quiet electric motors for up to 8 people. Operate until sunset all year round.
Prices: 1hr from $129, 2hr from $199, 3hr from $289
Notes: No boat licence or experience required. The boats feature a central picnic table. BYO food and drink for your picnic. Dogs are welcome.
Clifton Springs Boat Hire (Clifton Springs)

Mornington Boat Hire (Mornington)
Services: Single kayak (suitable for 1 adult and 1 small child), double kayak (suitable for up to two adults and 1 small child), Stand Up Paddle board and reef board hire.

Jetlet Jet Ski Hire (Mornington Peninsula)
Services: Hire of Yamaha VX Deluxe 110HP / 130HP Yamaha, Yamaha EX Sport 130hp. Operates during the Summer Season (1st October - January 31st).
Prices: 1hr is $170-$250, 8hr is $600-$800

Murray River Canoe Hire (Albury)
Services: Come and hire a canoe and take it to your favourite canoeing places.
Prices: 2-seater canoe: $60 per day, 2-seater sit-on-top kayak: $60 per day, 1-seater sit-on-top kayak $40 per day
Notes: Also conducts canoe and kayak trips on the Murray River between Lake Hume, Albury, Corowa, Yarrawonga and beyond from as little as 1.5 hours to 3-4 days.
Mildura Boat Hire (Buronga)
Services: Day and half day hire of Tinnie with 5HP outboard (1-4 people, no license), Tinnie with 25HP outboard (1-5 people, boat license required), 2 person canoes, Stand Up Paddleboard and kayaks (1 or 2 person)

Echuca Boat and Canoe Hire (Echuca)
Services: Hire of aluminium motor boat (up to 6 people), BBQ boat (10-12 people), canoes (2, 3,4 seater). kayaks (1 person), stand up paddle boards, fishing boat (4 person) and pontoon BBQ boat (10-11 people).
Prices: Aluminium motor boat: 1hr $50, day $200, BBQ boat: 1hr $125, 5hr $385, canoes: 2 seater: 1hr $20, 5hr $60, canoes: 3 to 4 seater: 1hr $30, 5hr $90, kayaks: $20 for the 1st hour then $10 for each hour after, stand up paddle boards: $20 for the 1st hour then $10 for each hour after, fishing boat: 2 day min $400 and $200 each additional day and Pontoon BBQ boat: 4hr min $325, 8hr $625.
Notes: No boat license is required for the aluminium motor boat and BBQ boat as these boats will not exceed 10 knots. Available during day light hours only. The fishing boat and pontoon BBQ boat require a boat license. The operator also runs canoe trips.
Victor Hire Boats (Lakes Entrance)
Services: Fleet includes 9 x Putt putt boats (up to 8 people), 1 x 4.8m Polycraft (licensed boat users, up to 5 people), 2 x Party / Pontoon Boat (up to 12 people)
Prices: Putt putt: $70 first hour and $50 for each hour after, Polycraft: $80 first hour, $150 for 2hr and $210 for 3 hrs, Party / Pontoon Boat: $180 first hour and $120 for each hour after.
Notes: Boat license not required for pontoon and putt putt boats.
Bucklands Jetty Boat Hire (Mallacoota)
Services: Nine boats in the fleet that can carry up to eight people. There is a range of boats to suit different abilities and requirements. For the experienced boater and serious fishermen, there are Polycraft boats which require a boat licence to drive.
Prices: Half Cabin & Blue Polycraft: 2 hrs $90, 3 hrs $100.
Notes: The boats are easy to drive and operate and a boat licence is not required for the half cabin boats. Daylight hours only and weather permitting.
Mallacoota Hire Boats (Mallacoota)
Services: Fleet of 8 x 5m power boats, kayaks (junior, single and double kayaks available), stand up boards and pedal boats.
Prices: Power boat: $90 for 2 hrs - $180 for 8 hrs, Polycraft (license required): $120 for 2 hrs - $210 for 8 hrs, single kayak: $20 for 1 hr - $70 for 8 hrs, double kayak: $30 for 1 hr - $100 for 8 hrs, pedal boats: $10 per 1/2 hr. Fishing rods: $10 per day.
Notes: All power boats have outboard motors fitted with forward steer and electric start and Sun smart Bimini covers. The standard power boats can be operated without a boat licence but the 4.5 m Polycraft fitted with a 60HP outboard requires a boat licence to operate.
Riviera Nautic (Metung)
Services: A very large charter fleet of yachts and motor cruisers. Yachts are Catalina 28 (6 people max), Catalina 320 (7 people max), Beneteau 34 (7 people max), Dufour 36 Dufour (8 people max) and Jeanneau 379 (9 people max). Motor cruisers are Clipper 34 (8 people max), Seamaster 36 (10 people max), Bulls Mariner 8-Berth (8 people max), Tanjil 41 (11 people max) and Bulls Mariner 10-Berth (10 people max). Also day boats for up to 8 people and high speed boat (license required) for up to 6 people.
Prices: Yachts are $1250-$2000 for 3 days (low season), motor cruisers are $1390-$1740 for 3 days (low season), day boats from $90 and high speed boat + fuel for 4hrs from $300.
Notes: You are not required to hold a boat operator's licence or even have previous boating experience to hire a yacht, motor cruiser, or dayboat except for the high speed boat which requires a boat licence. For the yachts, if you do not have prior experience you will need to spend some time after your briefing with a sailing master to learn the required skills.
Mildura Dockside Cafe & Boat Hire (Mildura)
Services: Hire of Tinny's with 15 HP outboard (2 people, boat license required), Polycraft runabouts with 5 HP outboard (license not required), pontoon boats (up to 10 adults), SUP / paddleboards, hobie boards, pedal boats and single or double kayaks.
Prices: Tinny's: $200 for a day, Polycraft runabouts: $200 for a day, pontoon boats: 3.5hr: $225, 7hr: $330, SUP/paddleboards: $30 or 1 hr, $75 for half day, hobie boards: $60 or 1 hr, $95 for half day, pedal boats: $60 for 1 hr and kayaks: $45 or 1 hr, $90 for half day. Lower prices apply outside public and school holidays.
Notes: Fuel is included in the price. There is a cafe serving coffees, refreshments and light lunches overlooking the Murray River. Also on river refuelling and bike hire.
Bulls Cruisers (Paynesville)
Services: Hire of classic fishing boat (10 people max), Dayboat with protection from the elements (8 people max) and pontoon boat (14 people max)
Prices: Classic fishing boat: $300 full day, Dayboat: $250 full day, $175 half day, Pontoon boat: $450 full day
Notes: No boat licence required.
