Benalla Region Road Rides
Benalla is the ideal spot for the cycling enthusiast, the weekend warrior or for those just after a dose of fresh country air. Hit the tarmac or trail on one of the many beautiful and scenic rides around Benalla.
The local terrain offers a variety of road riding experiences and the area is well signposted to share the road.
If you prefer a slower pace, just climb on your bike to explore great local wineries, pubs, markets and farm gates around the area. Peddle out to the Swan Pool Cinema, take in the stunning scenery of Winton Wetlands or learn about the Ned Kelly myth on the Kelly Touring Route, a gentle cycle around the Benalla Ned Kelly sites.
Moorngag-Tatong
50km (blue)- Start by heading south at the McDonalds roundabout (127 Bridge St E, Benalla), ride past the hospital and turn right at Benalla-Tatong Road.
- Ride over the freeway overpass, turn right at Samaria Road and head south for about 20km.
- Turn left into Tatong-Moorngag Road.
- Enjoy the beautiful tree lined ride up over the hills and cross Holand's creek before turning left at Tatong and follow the Benalla-Tatong Road all the way back into town.
- Note: The Tatong Tavern is famous for their fabulous pub fare so be sure to stop and check it out.
Lurg Loop
52km (blue)Benalla's most scenic ride. The locals love this ride!
- Start by heading south at the McDonalds roundabout (127 Bridge St E, Benalla), ride past the hospital and head out on Kilfeera Road for about 24km to Upper Ryan's Creek.
- Turn hard left into Upper Lurg Road and follow it north over the hills until it loops around and back into Kilfeera Road where you will turn right and follow it back into town.
Mokoan Discovery Trail
22kmExperience both Benalla and the Winton Wetlands as you take a journey along the Mokoan Discovery Trail. This 22 kilometres of off-road trail follows Kennedy Creek along a purpose built track from central Benalla, along the Dam wall ending at the Mokoan Hub and Cafe.
A great ride for all levels of rider. The Key sections of this trail are: Benalla Station (Mackellar St, Benalla) to Witt Street, Witt Street to the Inlet Channel (three kilometres), down the Channel path to the Winton Wetlands (five kilometres), Nelson Road to the Outlet Channel (seven kilometres) and outlet Channel to the Mokoan Hub and Cafe (five kilometres).
Benalla Lake Ride
4.2km (green)The Benalla Lake Loop ride is an easy peaceful ride alongside the towns lake.
The ride has many interesting places to stop along the way including; the Mural, Ned Kelly's sash, the Miniature House, Hec Waller's memorial, Amnelatic Sundial, Weary Dunlop's statue, the Indigenous and Botanical Gardens, the Benalla Art Gallery and cafe, the Benalla Monash Bridge and exhibitions at the Costume and Kelly Museum located at the Benalla Visitor Information Centre.
Winton Wetlands Ride
64km (black)- Leaving from the Benalla Visitor Information Centre (14 Mair St, Benalla), travel north along Bridge Street and Benalla/Winton Road (Old Hume Highway) to Yarrawonga Road.
- Travel north for 8km's, crossing the railway line and outlet channel and then right into Lake Road.
- This follows the entire shoreline of the Lake for 16.5kms.
- Turn right into Glenrowan Boweya Road and ride south. Turn left at the T intersection and travel 3kms into Glenrowan.
- Turn right at Beaconsfield Parade and right into Gladstone Street, which becomes the Winton/Benalla Road and ride the 24km's back to Benalla.
Burness Road Ride
30km (green)- Start at the Faithful Street roundabout and head north on Faithful Street over the railway track.
- Follow for a few hundred metres and then turn left into Goomalibee Road and follow around for about 5km before turning left into Burness Road.
- Follow for about 9km and turn left into Tarnook Road (Baddaginnie-Goomalibee Road).
- Enjoy the undulations and keep and eye out for Goannas!
- Proceed into Baddaginnie and turn left into Baddaginnie-Benalla Road to head back to Benalla.
Ford's Bridge
86km (black)- Start by heading south at the McDonalds roundabout (127 Bridge St E, Benalla), past the hospital and turn right at Benalla-Tatong Road.
- After crossing the freeway, turn right at Samaria Road and head south for about 20km.
- Turn left into Tatong-Moorngag Road and ride into Tatong.
- Turn right and follow the Tatong-Tolmie Road all the way out to Ford's bridge.
- Turn back and ride back into Tatong and grab something to eat and drink at the Tavern.
- Follow the Benalla-Tatong Road north and turn right at Molyullah-Tatong Road.
- After 10km's turn left into Kilfeera Road and follow it back to Benalla.
Emu Bridge Road
24km (green)Benalla's easiest and most popular ride - a pleasant ride and a great introduction for beginning road riders.
- Start by heading south at the McDonalds roundabout, ride past the hospital and head out on Kilfeera Road for about 8km - and turn right into Emu Bridge Road.
- Make sure you stop at the bridge and look for our friendly platypus before turning right at Tatong Road.
- Follow Tatong Road all the way back into town.
