Classes:
Infants 4 months to 3 years (parent and child)
This class runs for 30 minutes with a maximum of 5 children per class. Classes at Beaver Swim School are designed with the age and physical development of your child in mind. Our qualified infant aquatics instructor will guide you and your child through a series of exercises and games designed specifically to perceptual motivation and motor skill development.
Pre-school 3-5 years old
This session runs for 30 minutes with a maximum of 4 children per class. Emphasis for this age group is on skill development and water safety education, obtained through movement, exploration, water adjustment, fun and games.
School Age 5 years plus
This session runs for 30 minutes with a maximum of 5 children per class. The teaching of swimming and survival techniques is a priority for this age group.
We endeavour to ensure your child is placed in an age and ability appropriate class. We teach to the needs of the individual child, and role models in a class is an important factor in the learning process.
Our aim is firstly to develop confidence and independence. This is achieved by teaching the elementary survival stroke of dog paddle, a stroke which children can learn before breath control is mastered.
Once dog paddle has been mastered, children are introduced to freestyle and backstroke with strong emphasis on breath control, correct body position and stroke technique, appropriate to the child's physical and psychological development. Breaststroke is introduced when the children show readiness to cope with a new technique.
As pupils become proficient in these strokes they are promoted to more advanced classes where the focus is on stroke improvement, streamlining and stamina building.
Semi Squad
The session runs for 45 minutes with a maximum of 10 children per class, using two lanes. The teacher is in the water so a hands-on stroke correction and technique refinement can be addressed.
Butterfly is formally introduced at this stage, together with various training drills, to enhance and extend the development of all strokes. Endurance is built up with extended lap swimming during this session. Basic elements of competition swimming are also introduced, eg diving, racing starts, tumble turns and relay racing. A fun component always concludes this session.
Special Needs Classes
Instructors with Austswim qualifications are available to teach people with disabilities.
This generally involves scheduling a time during which important details regarding the participant's medical condition/disability are discussed, which is followed by an assessment lesson. We can then determine the type of class required.
Children are included in mainstream classes where possible, but ratios are reduced to provide extra attention.
