Ballarat - Sovereign Hill
Sovereign Hill is a recreated goldfields township set over 25 hectares on a site which forms part of the richest alluvial goldfields the world has ever seen.
It offers a wide range of activities carried out by costumed staff and volunteers, many of whom portray some of the behaviours and prejudices of the 1850s!
There is so much to see and do at Sovereign Hill including:
- The Red Hill Gully Diggings where you pan for real gold
- More than 50 working horses, including Clydesdales & Percherons
- Craftsmen at work in traditional 1850s trades
- A 10-minute, self-guided underground adventure tour of the Red Hill Mine which depicts the discovery of the 69kg Welcome Nugget, the second largest gold nugget ever found
- Regular demonstrations and street theatre performances by our staff and actors
- 1850s-style shopping

Review:
Sovereign Hill is usually the highlight of a visit to Ballarat and is a recipient of a number of tourism awards. Given that the site is so large and extensive, the cost of admission is reasonable. However, don't for one moment think that is the end of significant expenditure for the day. There are many activities such as a stage coach ride and mine tour - with a family this can really mount up.
Get a schedule of events happening during the day and structure your visit around these. Our kids (aged 3 and 5) weren't that interested in a lot of things and may have been a little young to fully enjoy the experience. Note that on a wet day the main street can get very muddy - wear appropriate footwear.
