Ballam Park Reserve (West) Playground, Cranbourne Road, Frankston
The main playground at Ballam Park has had a major upgrade to add more exciting areas. The playground now has a skating / BMX area, huge long climbing wall and lots of parkour / climbing areas.
The area closest to Cranbourne Road is now a great active play area. In the central part of this area is a basketball court with nets at both ends which is circled by a skate / BMX / pump track with lots of volcanoes and bumps plus a couple of steep banked turns in the corners. Surrounding the track is an extensive area of soft mounds with concrete walls of various heights and shapes and extensive monkey bars. This area is great for anyone with an interest in parkour, climbing or just wants to test their sense of balance. Three of the mounds have an in-ground trampoline. One side of this area has a huge long wall which has rock climbing holds along its entire length.
Looking out over this area is a large structure with lots of exploration and play opportunities for all ages. The lower end for younger kids has ramp access has a slide, tunnel, steps, inclined walkway, fireman's pole, log steps and rope net. This area also has four swings, one has a safety chain and another has a harness. The main structure has a spiral slide, huge wide slide, rope nets, ladders, abacus, big climbing wall and lots of cubby areas underneath. A rope traverse leads to a tower with a steep tunnel slide.
Around the main structure are two very long flying foxes with disk seats, birds nest swing, areas with vertical wooden climbing poles with climbing holds and another area of metal climbing frames and concrete walls for parkour.
There is a shelter with tables, unshaded tables, water tap, BBQs, toilets, free parking and plenty of grassy areas to play. The park is huge and about 50 metres away, within the park, is another very good playground which is most suited to younger kids and has water play.
Between the playgrounds is a statue of boxer Johny Famechon with little plaques listing each of his 67 bouts.
Ballam Park is home to a huge area of open space featuring walking trails, ovals, dog off leash area and an athletics track. There is plenty to do for people of all ages, with shade and barbecues provided in a number of areas.
