Bald Hill 1000+ Steps (Bacchus Marsh)

Bald Hill 1000+ Steps (Bacchus Marsh)

The 1000+ steps walk links the residential area close to Halletts Way with the peak of the nearby Bald Hill. The link terminates in a lookout.

Starting the walk - The first step is actually at 24 Ramsay Crescent, Darley and most people park along this road. At this point there are bins and a water tap.

However there is a carpark at Telford Park, 88 Wittick Street, Darley which has seats, tables and a water tap. This place is the start for the Telford Park All Abilities Sculpture Trail. After a short distance there is a branch to the 1000+ Steps. This path leads out of Telford Park and there is a concrete path beside houses which leads up to the start point on Ramsay Crescent.

Along the Steps
Initially there are signs showing the number of steps completed every 100 steps but as you get higher the frequency of these signs reduces. There are very few seats with a concrete wall to sit on after 410 steps and 820 steps. After 630 steps the path crosses Manning Boulevard where there is a water tap and more bins.

The landscape is not that nice at the lower parts of the steps with houses on one site and scarred land with temporary fencing on the other side. As you get higher up, it becomes more pleasant with light bushland, although all the trees have been planted in straight lines. A nice feature are the gardens beds with native vegetation on both sides of the steps.

After 1014 steps there is a flat area.

More steps lead higher up to where there is a shelter with a seat beside an asphalt track (Lerderderg Track). You could follow this track to another shelter about 150m away.

If you are finding the steps a bit too much on your calves on the way downhill, there is a rough track beside the steps that some people were using.
