Timber Worker Sculpture

The Timber Worker Sculpture is located at the front of the Alexandra Visitor Information Centre in Rotary Park and is also known as the Axeman / Faller Statue.

Sculptured by Marysville sculpture Bruno Torfs, this piece of work helps to promote the heritage of workers and families of the Rubicon Ranges Forest Sawmills of the early 1900s. Sawmills operated in the Rubicon Ranges from 1905 up until the final closure on the 13 January 1939 due to the industry being destroyed by the 1939 Black Friday Bush Fires.

The fires ripped through the Rubicon Ranges destroying all in its path. The timber workers sawmills and settlements were burnt and 12 local lives were lost. The fires went on to claim nearly two million hectares Victoria wide and destroyed over 650 building. 71 lives were lost across Victoria as a result of Black Friday.

Other areas devastated by the fires included Noojee, Woods Point, Omeo, Warrandyte, and Yarra Glen as well as Narbethong, Warburton, Erica, Rubicon, Dromana, Mansfield, the Otway Ranges and the Grampian Ranges.

Review:

The Visitor Information Centre is set in a lovely big grassy park with two main shelters with a lot of tables and BBQs. There are also toilets, shaded and unshaded tables, water tap and a lovely bushman sculpture. There is a Victorian Truck Drivers Memorial. It seems like all truck drivers must have a nickname. Some of the more interesting knicknames for the drivers honoured here are Cookie, Big Baz, Buffalo, Piano Man, Bones, Little Egg and Cannonball.
